What do a tanning salon, web design platform, and self-love coaching business have in common? Jayd Lem, of course! This self-proclaimed “serial entrepreneur” is a woman set on making the world a more beautiful, confident place. We got to know Jayd’s business goals, Thanksgiving plans, and even her future aspirations as a cowgirl!
Tell us a little bit about yourself: who is Jayd?
I'm a serial entrepreneur, risk-taker, and creative leader who cherishes self-discovery. I'm my own self-improvement project and have a passion for helping women discover and own who they are.
What do you do for work?
I run and own a mix of businesses that share one common goal: help women do more of what makes them feel good.
I own an organic airbrush tanning studio in Phoenix called Bronze Buddha Glow. We're cheeky, fun, and have been in business for three years. I also consult for CloudLGS, a web design platform for entrepreneurs. My most recent passion is Femme Beat, an intimate coaching series for women that hosts dinners, workshops, and personal coaching with speakers and topics on female sexuality, esteem, and power.
My path into coaching has been an experiential journey. I came from a background of child abuse and molestation that affected my views on sex, love, and relationships. As you can imagine, there were a lot of misguided beliefs, shame, and repression I had to sort out to become the person I am today. Through the many choices and paths I took, I successfully reclaimed by sexuality by embracing it as a product, but a product that was in my control, not controlled by others or society. In doing so, I was also able to take ownership of many aspects of my life. My confidence stems from a deep understanding and embracing of self, which in turn has allowed me the freedom to fail or succeed, pursue my passions, and disrupt the status quo.
Just like most women, I still find myself living in the constraints and social biases towards women and female sexuality, but I'm better aware and in the position to fight them rather than be molded by them.
I believe sexuality is perhaps the second most powerful natural driving force (just behind self-preservation), and we don't talk about it enough. It is a significant aspect of ourselves. Not taking ownership of that significant force means, to a great degree, we do not have ownership of our lives.
What does life look like outside of work?
I really value deep, intimate connections. Ideas spark and hearts are recharged, so I spend quality time with those I love on a weekly basis. I also unplug, leave my phone at home, take walks, baths, burn candles, and read. I think it's important to regulate how we "connect" with ourselves and others for our emotional and mental well-being.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
The less you care about what others think of you, the more efficient you'll be.
Where do you see yourself in one year? five years? ten? What changes? What stays the same?
In a year, I'd like to be coaching full-time and have Bronze Buddha Glow run itself. In five years, Bronze Buddha Glow will have already been sold, and I'll be a part-time coach and a full-time cowgirl!
What are you thankful for?
My fiancée, friends, and all the support I’ve received. This year, I've learned the importance of having partners and collaborators in manifesting goals, and I’ve really let the 'lone wolf' mentality go to the wayside.
How do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
I'll be joining my fiancée's family in celebration this year. I'm not that much of a cook, so I'll probably keep it safe and just buy a pie and a good bottle of wine.
How do you express gratitude for others?
Verbally and in letters. Just the other day at dinner, I told a girlfriend how much I loved her. I also love handwriting all the things I value, love, and admire in someone. It's a very personal act and lost art. There's something about a handwritten note that I find so traditional and romantic. I like to think the letters are something they keep forever.
Lastly, what is your favorite tea and snack to pair with?
A warm Manhattan Black with a sweet croissant.
